What happens if the pitcher throws the ball into the stands?

I know Rick Ankiel (excuse my spelling) was probably the only one that's ever done it, but what are the Major League rules about it should it happen? do the runners move up? is it just a ball or does the batter take 1st base? I am generally as baseball genius but this is probably the only thing regarding baseball that I don't know.
