Antique watch with writing scratched into bezel?
Crude writings inside the back of the case tell about service to the watch. Each watch repairman has his own system of telling when and how he worked on a watch. I have many old watches that have such inscriptions. I own many solid 18 kt. gold watches, and they're quite costly by now. One is a Cartier "Santos Dumont" that I bought in 1998 for $5800. A new one cost $14,600 a few months ago on Cartier's online catalog. I also own a Cartier "Tank Louis Cartier" that cost $825 in 1971. I don't see it listed now, but the last I herd it cost nearly as much as the "Santos Dumont". I also own 18 kt. gold watches by Patek Philippe ($24,300 now), Vacheron Constantin, Piaget ($32,600 now), Jaeger-LeCoultre ($20,350 now), etc. The case is the costliest part of a gold watch. You can try to find a movement for it. They can be cheap or very costly. I have a pal who repairs watches. He bought some ETA movements that didn't cost very much. Over 95% of Swiss and German watch brands use ETA movements. A Patek Philippe movement will cost much more. Take it to a good repairman and ask for his advice. Online, check "genasvintagewatches". Gennady Lubinsky has worked on some of mine, so I know he is good.
