Need help finding biblical commentary?

So I'm looking for a good biblical commentary that explains verses of the bible with historical context but all the books I find on amazon seem to be more applications of scripture to daily life. I want a down to earth historical background to the bible that would be helpful in understanding the correct meaning of vague verses that, in our time, make no sense because we don't have the same social norms, etc. Do you know of any good ones? I was thinking of Asimov's but I wanted to know if there were other better options.
